Dr. Edmison, as the founder and Medical Director of Focus Eye Centre, has been involved in laser vision correction since 1992. He is a leader and pioneer in the field of refractive surgery. Having performed over 15,000 PRK and LASIK procedures, Dr. Edmison is one of the most experienced and respected laser eye surgeons in Canada.

Between 1996 and 1998, Dr. Edmison was the President of the Canadian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He is also the former Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Grace General Hospital in Ottawa. Dr. Edmison is currently on staff at the faculty of medicine at Queen’s University in Kingston.

Dr. Edmison has published numerous articles in the field of ophthalmic surgery and is frequently asked to lecture at conferences throughout the world. In March 2000, Dr. Edmison was one of only four Canadian surgeons invited to speak at the First Congress of the World Federation of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a unique gathering of the world’s most respected and innovative eye surgeons. Every year, Dr. Edmison is asked to give various presentations on refractive surgery at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery annual conference.

In January 2003, Dr. Edmison was part of a volunteer cataract-teaching program run by an organization called ORBIS. The program took place in Fuzhou, China. In June 2003, Dr. Edmison was asked to participate in a research study for VISX, the leading manufacturer of excimer lasers. Only a very small number of Canadian surgeons have been given this honour.

Dr. Claude Ménard attended medical school in Sherbrooke and in Québec City. He is a corneal specialist and has performed more than 200 corneal transplants and over 3,500 cataract surgeries. In 1994, he did a fellowship in refractive surgery at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

During his university days in Sherbrooke, Dr. Ménard was awarded the PRIX MOSBY in 1979 and the PRIX LANGE in 1980 and 1981. He was honoured with the PRIX D’EXCELLENCE EN RECHERCHE from Laval University in 1987.

Dr. Ménard is a member of many professional associations including the Association des Ophtalmologistes du Québec where he sat on the board of directors from 1996 to 2000. At the Université de Sherbrooke, Dr. Ménard was professor of corneal diseases for the residency program from 1988 to 1994 and associate professor of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine from 1995 to 1996. Dr. Ménard was the Head of the Ophthalmology department at the Centre Universitaire de Santé de l'Estrie in 1996.

Since 1999, Dr. Ménard has been the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Centre Hospitalier des Vallées de l'Outaouais in Gatineau, Québec. Dr. Ménard is also an associated member at the Centre Communautaire du Pontiac in Shawville. Dr. Ménard is actively involved in ophthalmic research and regularly gives presentations across Canada.

Dr. John Cheung is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Dr. Cheung graduated with honours from the Faculty of Medicine at University of Toronto in 1995. He studied Ophthalmology at Queen’s University and then did further post-graduate study in Ophthalmology at McGill University in Montreal. Dr. Cheung is a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Dr. Cheung has written several articles in the field of ophthalmology and is the recipient of numerous academic prizes and graduate scholarships including the R. Samuel McLaughlin Foundation Fellowship Award at McGill University and the Wilkinson Scholarship at the University of Toronto for excellence in the field of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Cheung has been affiliated with Focus Eye Centre both as a resident and a surgeon since 2000. His practice is located next to Focus Eye Centre in Hotel Dieu Hospital. In addition to his responsibilities at Focus Eye Centre, Dr. Cheung teaches at Queen’s University. Dr. Cheung has quickly developed an outstanding reputation among his medical colleagues and the Kingston community as a caring and skilled surgeon who is committed to providing the best possible medical care to all of his patients.


Focus Eye Centre Ottawa Kingston Laser Vision Correction Eye Surgery Lasik Wavefront LVC Blepharoplasty - Dr. Kevin SmithDr. Kevin Smith, MDCM, FRCS(C)

Dr. Kevin Smith is an ophthalmologist, cataract and oculoplastic surgeon providing state-of-the-art eye care to patients in Ottawa and surrounding areas.

Dr. Smith is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Canada) in Ophthalmology and is American Board Certified in Ophthalmology. A Montreal native, he has been in private practice in Ottawa since 1992, averaging 500 cataracts and 500 oculoplastics procedures each year. He is currently the team ophthalmologist for the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club.

Dr. Smith earned a B.Sc. in Mathematics, a Diploma in Management and an M.D.C.M. from McGill University, where he was active in varsity football (quarterback, 1975-1979), intramural basketball and volleyball, and was a member of the McGill Medicine Band.

His post-graduate training included a rotating internship at St. Mary's Hospital, McGill University, a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Western Ontario and a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastics and Orbital Reconstructive Surgeryat McGill University. During this training he received the "Upjohn Resident Research Day" Award of Excellence, the Ophthalmic Photography Contest, First Prize and the McGill 15th Annual Clinical & Scientific Day Prize - Best Fellow's Paper.

Dr. Smith worked for the Department of National Defense, first as a base flight surgeon in Portage, Manitoba (1986-1988) and then as an ophthalmologist with the rank of Major at the National Defense Medical Centre (1992-1997).


Optometrists

Dr. Curtis Bain

Dr. Bain graduated from the University of Waterloo with an Honours Bachelor of Science, and then a Doctor of Optometry degree. His internship included a term at the University of California at Berkley, and another at the Munich Eye Hospital in Germany. After practicing in Oshawa for one year, he moved to Perth in 1993.

Dr. Bain has served as President of the Perth Chamber of Commerce, and is currently a Director on the Perth and Smith Falls District Hospital Board.

Dr. Bain also enjoys playing competitive soccer in Ottawa.


Dr. Kirsten Beauchesne

Dr. Beauchesne graduated from University of Montreal School of Optometry in 1999 following undergraduate biology studies at the University of Ottawa. She completed an internship at the YKHC hospital in remote northwestern Alaska. Immediately following graduation she pursued her interest in refractive surgery by providing pre-operative and post-operative care at a surgical centre in Vancouver.  Dr. Beauchesne also provided full-scope optometry care at her family-oriented practice in Vancouver.

In 2004 she returned to her hometown of Ottawa. She is thrilled with the technological advances in refractive surgery such as Wavefront Laser Vision Correction that she can now offer patients at Focus Eye Centre.


Dr. Marie Christine Deschênes, OD

Dr. Deschênes is a bilingual optometrist who is fully licensed under the College of Optometrists of Ontario, and is a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists and the Quebec Association of Optometrists. She has served the optometric community as an examiner for the CSAO (Canadian Standard Assessment in Optometry).

Dr. Deschênes joined the Focus Eye Centre team in January 2004. She graduated from the University of Montreal School of Optometry in 2002, after launching her studies in the field of health sciences while at the University of Ottawa.

She practiced optometry in a family-oriented clinical setting for two years, in association with another ophthalmologist in the Ottawa region, before concentrating on refractive surgery care. Along with her Focus colleagues, Dr. Deschênes oversees the post-operative care of Focus patients, while also participating in pre-operative consultations and assisting co-managing optometrists.

Dr. Deschêenes makes the well-being and satisfaction of her patients her top priority. As such, she is a superb addition to the Focus Eye Centre team.


Dr. Angela Malik, OD

Following her undergraduate studies at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Dr. Malik completed her Doctor of Optometry program at the University of Waterloo in 1991.

Dr. Malik began practicing in Ottawa in 1991. In conjunction with her private practices, she joined Laser Eye Tech, a refractive surgery clinic in 1998. As Clinical Director of Laser Eye Tech, Dr. Malik was responsible for pre- operative and post-operative care of refractive surgery patients.

In 2000, Dr. Malik was offered the prestigious position as the Chief of Optometry Division at one of the worlds largest eye hospitals located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. During her tenure, she was responsible for the refraction, contact lens and low vision clinics, as well as being responsible for providing optometric services to VIPs including the Saudi royal family. At the hospital Dr. Malik was also involved with the teaching, training and examination of Ophthalmology residents from King Saud University, College of Medicine. 

In 2002, she relocated to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. Dr. Malik was appointed as clinical director of the British Lasik and Cosmetic Surgery Center where she worked closely with a team of international surgeons in the treatment and management of patients with glaucoma, cataracts, pediatric strabismus, oculoplastics and refractive surgery. 

After practicing abroad for over 5 years, Dr. Malik decided to return to Canada to be closer to her family. She established a successful private practice in Dartmouth, N.S., as well as joining a Halifax laser eye clinic.

Over her career, Dr. Malik has been recipient of numerous awards, including Best Optometrist (Consumers Choice Awards) Ottawa/Hull region 1997-1999, Best Lecturer (Optometry Symposium2002) and Best Teacher (KKESH medical staff).

Dr. Malik relocated to Ottawa in late 2007 where she became a welcome addition to Focus Eye’s team of highly qualified and dedicated eye-care professionals.


Dr. Annie T. Nguyen

Dr. Nguyen received her Bachelor of Science in Physiology from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec in 1990. She completed her Doctorate of Optometry from University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 1994.

Dr. Nguyen has been working in the refractive surgery field for almost 9 years. She has seen and managed all existing refractive procedures, including: PRK, LASIK, Clear Lens Extraction, and others. Having had a laser vision correction (LVC) procedure in 1996, Dr. Nguyen is a true believer in LVC and understands very well what her patients go through during the recovery period.

Dr. Nguyen moved to Ottawa in August 1997 and joined Focus Eye Centre in January 1998, serving as the liaison between local optometrists and FEC as well taking care of pre-op and post-op patients. She has given lectures on LVC.

Dr. Nguyen is also working in a private clinic with ophthalmologists where she provides primary care and follows up with cataract and glaucoma patients.


Dr. Thomas A. Noël, BSc, OD

Dr. Noël graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Ottawa in 1996. He then pursued his studies at the University of Montreal School of Optometry and graduated with a Doctorate in Optometry in 2000. After graduation, Dr. Noël did a residency at the Syracuse Veteran Hospital Department of Ophthalmology in Syracuse, New York, in conjunction with the Eye Consultants of Syracuse. Dr. Noël moved back to his hometown of Ottawa in 2001, where he has his own optometry practice.

Dr. Noël developed a keen interest in laser vision correction and was hired by Dr. Edmison, Focus Eye Centre’s Medical Director, in May 2001 to oversee the optometric care of Focus’s laser vision patients. He has given numerous lectures on laser vision correction and acts as the liaison between co-managing optometrists and Focus Eye Centre.

Dr. Noël was the President of the Ottawa Society of Optometrists from 2001 to 2004. He is a fully licensed Optometrists under the College of Optometrists of Ontario. He is also a member of the Ontario Association of Optometrists, and of the Quebec Association of Optometrists. Dr. Noël has also been an examiner for the past three consecutive years for the Canadian National Board Exams in Optometry.
