Clear Lens Exchange (CLE)
Simply, clear lens exchange (CLE), or refractive lensectomy, is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the clear natural crystalline lens for refractive reasons such as myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). CLE is performed in the same manner as a cataract operation during which the eye's natural lens is removed and replaced by a new plastic lens. The eye's refraction error is corrected as the new lens has a refraction compared to the eye's original lens. A thorough pre-operative examination is performed to determine the patient's corneal thickness and shape as well as their degree of refraction. CLE is technically relatively easy to perform and proven effective when followed by implantation of a low or negative power intraocular lens for myopia, and a high power intraocular lens for hyperopia. That said, as with all types of surgery, CLE involves some medical risk. These as well as any questions patients may have are reviewed during a face-to-face consultation with the surgeon well in advance of any procedure. In the News: Refractive lens exchange the best option for high hyperopes— Roibeard O'hEineachain (Munich) — REFRACTIVE lens exchange may be the treatment of choice for high hyperopes, particularly among those who have reached presbyopic age, according to Joseph Colin MD. "Refractive lens exchange is easy to perform and it produces predictable and accurate refractive results in most cases. It also respects the architecture of the centre of the cornea and provides in most cases a superb quality of vision with fast visual rehabilitation," Dr Colin told the XXI Congress of the ESCRS. The aging population of most western countries is likely to contribute to an increased demand for the surgical correction of hyperopia. Testimonials: "It has now been 3 months since my surgery and Ican truly say that my vision is now better than with my glasses.." Continue Reading... Links:
